General Program Copy -
The Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy (MIP) at Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) produces leaders who will engineer policy and spur innovation in government, NGOs, IGOs, and private companies around the world. At the core of this two-year professional graduate program are Stanford's exceptional faculty and an interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching. The program also combines theory and practice; encouraging students to utilize their knowledge in tangible ways, such as through the completion of summer internships and their participation in a capstone practicum project. Students gain broad-based analytical and policy skills as well as a deep understanding of the substantive issues facing the world today. MIP classes include students of the caliber and diversity that are drawn to Stanford, while the program's small size fosters an intimate and dynamic learning experience.
Students work closely with scholars at FSI and specialize in one of five specialization tracks reflecting contemporary policy challenges:
- Cyber Policy and Security (CYBER)
- Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment (ENRE)
- Global Health (GH)
- Governance and Development (GOVDEV)
- International Security (ISEC)

The MIP Practicum: Tackling Real-World Policy Problems
The MIP practicum is a two-quarter capstone course in which students work in teams to tackle global policy problems, develop solutions, and implement them in the real world.
Beginning in 2019, MIP will launch a redesigned practicum that revolves around a cutting-edge problem-solving framework developed by Professors Francis Fukuyama and Jeremy Weinstein. Students will learn how to use the framework before setting out in teams to apply it to their assigned policy problems. A crucial aspect of the process is field work - students will travel to relevant sites to meet with stakeholders and understand the realities on the ground. Throughout the process, students will benefit from the guidance of faculty, mentors, advisors, and staff.
The end product of the practicum is the comprehensive analysis of a policy problem along with an implementation plan for a proposed solution. Our students' work has led to meaningful impact for our partner organizations and has been featured by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and CNN.
