What is Stanford Alumni Mentoring (SAM)?

SAM brings the student and alumni community closer together. SAM was built with an alum's busy schedule in mind. The platform allows alumni to control their availability and level of participation with the ability: 1) To limit the number of inbound meeting requests per month, and 2) the option to participate as a long-term and/or 'flash' mentor. Flash mentoring refers to one-time opportunities to grab a coffee or take a single phone call with a student.

How do I get started in SAM?

Click "JOIN NOW" on the main page
Complete your profile (using info from LinkedIn if you choose)
Verify the email sent to your inbox
Hold tight as a Stanford Admin verifies your account
Start mentoring, responding to student-posed career questions, and more!

How do I join the MIP private mentoring group?

Request to join our private group, Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy Mentorship Group
Update your profile
Review your privacy options
Should you only want to connect with MIP students, please be sure to set your profile to private by doing the following steps:
1. Click "My Preferences" on the upper right corner
2. Click "Privacy"
3. Under the "Allow my profile to be found by the other members of the community" box, and select "Only those in shared Group"

You also have the option to hide your name and blur your photo until you have accepted a mentorship request. Please follow the following steps to do so:

Click "My Preferences" on the upper right corner
Click "Privacy"
Under the "Anonymity" box, and check the box next to "Stanford Alumni Mentoring (SAM)"

What makes a successful mentor?

As a Stanford Alumni Mentor, you are a guide, friend, and resource who shares your Stanford education and professional experience to pave the way for current students to succeed at Stanford and beyond. Each mentoring connection officially lasts 12 weeks, though of course we hope that you stay connected for long after that! You are NOT expected to offer jobs or internships to your mentee, or to have all the answers!
