In the 1950s, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Its international trade was minimal and foreign ties were also limited. As its economy grew dramatically in the following decades, South Korea’s relationship with the outside world also developed tremendously. Seoul normalized relations with both Moscow and Beijing, and its relationship with the United States has evolved into more of a partnership from the previous patron-client relationship. Dr. Heo will introduce a new theory that explains the connection between South Korea’s economic development and its foreign policy.

Dr. Heo has authored four books, two of which were published by Cambridge University Press; and published over 60 articles in the numerous academic journals including Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Studies Quarterly, Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Political Research Quarterly, and Asian Survey. His research interests focus on Korean politics and international relations. He is a UWM Distinguished Professor in the department of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He received a PhD in political science from Texas A&M University.

This event is made possible through the generous support of the Koret Foundation.
