STANFORD UNIVERSITY invites applications for a tenure-line, open-rank
position in MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES to begin in the academic year 2014-15.
The scholar-teacher appointed will be based in a social science department
but is also expected to make contributions to the interdisciplinary study
of the Middle East and North Africa across the University. The appointment
can be in one of the following departments in the School of Humanities and
Sciences: Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Political Science, and
Sociology. Teaching responsibilities will be determined by the home
department.

Applicants should provide a cover letter including a brief statement of
research interests, a curriculum vitae including list of publications, and
sample(s) of recent scholarship. Assistant level and untenured applicants
should arrange to have three letters of reference submitted to Interfolio.
Currently tenured applicants should submit the names of three references.

Sir Lawrence Freedman, Professor of War Studies at King's College London, will present on his new book, Strategy: A History (Oxford University Press, 2013).

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Sir Lawrence Freedman is Professor of War Studies at King's College London. Professor Freedman has held his appointment since 1982, and he has served as Vice-Principal at King's College since 2003. Prior to his time at King's College, Professor Freedman held research appointments at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Nuffield College Oxford, and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1995, awarded the Commander of the British Empire in 1996, and the Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George in 2003. Most recently, Professor Freedman was elected in 2009 as a member of the official inquiry into Britain and the 2003 Iraq War.

David Holloway is the Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History, a professor of political science, and an FSI senior fellow. He was co-director of CISAC from 1991 to 1997, and director of FSI from 1998 to 2003. His research focuses on the international history of nuclear weapons, on science and technology in the Soviet Union, and on the relationship between international history and international relations theory. His book Stalin and the Bomb: The Soviet Union and Atomic Energy, 1939-1956 (Yale University Press, 1994) was chosen by the New York Times Book Review as one of the 11 best books of 1994, and it won the Vucinich and Shulman prizes of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. It has been translated into seven languages, most recently into Chinese. The Chinese translation is due to be published later in 2018. Holloway also wrote The Soviet Union and the Arms Race (1983) and co-authored The Reagan Strategic Defense Initiative: Technical, Political and Arms Control Assessment (1984). He has contributed to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Foreign Affairs, and other scholarly journals.

Since joining the Stanford faculty in 1986 -- first as a professor of political science and later (in 1996) as a professor of history as well -- Holloway has served as chair and co-chair of the International Relations Program (1989-1991), and as associate dean in the School of Humanities and Sciences (1997-1998). Before coming to Stanford, he taught at the University of Lancaster (1967-1970) and the University of Edinburgh (1970-1986). Born in Dublin, Ireland, he received his undergraduate degree in modern languages and literature, and his PhD in social and political sciences, both from Cambridge University.

When do people perceive themselves to be losing out from international economic integration?  Do these perceptions translate into vote change? Existing literature studies gain and loss from economic integration as a function of its objective material effect and political preferences that follow are assumed to reflect concerns about a broader set of social outcomes that they associate with economic openess, particularly reentment about relative deprivation.

From executive boardrooms to national capitols, leaders are debating the relative merits of contending models and strategies for attracting, developing, and empowering innovation talent--the people who drive economic growth and value creation through innovation.
 
On June 28, 2013, the Silicon Valley Project of the Stanford Program on Regions of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SPRIE) convened a circle of over 50 policymakers, executives and Stanford community members from 12 countries for an interactive roundtable on innovation talent at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

The roundtable featured six sessions, giving participants the opportunity to explore various aspects of the topics, including learning about "Accelerating the Next Generation of Innovation Talent" from Cameron Teitelman, Founder and CEO of StartX, and Divya Nag, the Founder of StartX Med. Participants also learned about the role of neural structures and their implications for marketing, innovation, leadership and decision making from Baba Shiv, the Sanwa Bank, Limited Professor of Marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
 
Topics of discussion included:
  • What are key data and trends for innovation talent in Silicon Valley?
  • What strategies are places such as London, Taiwan and Israel employing to become hotbeds of innovation that attract innovation talent?
  • How can companies successfully manage and empower their innovation talent? What best practices have been learned?
  • What insights and implications into innovation talent can be gathered from recent research?
  • How are universities innovating through programs such as Stanford's StartX and the d.school?

The panelists and speakers included professors, senior executives, and representatives from the diplomatic missions of Israel and the United Kingdom. In a panel moderated by Greg McKeown, CEO of THIS Inc., Evan Wittenberg, Senior Vice President of People at Box, and Kyung H. Yoon, CEO of Talent Age Associates, spoke about their experiences effectively hiring and managing innovation talent. One participant at the roundtable reflected that "it was quite a remarkable group of speakers and I was able to grasp many important insights that could be applied."

The republican tradition continues to frame French debates on empire, as it has done since the Revolution. French republicanism and Anglophone liberalism have shared numerous features in relation to empire: both are egalitarian traditions of moral universalism, and both uphold an ideal of political emancipation that has tended to entail assimilation to a European political model. This paper explores the course of French debates over empire from the period of Napoleon through the July Monarchy — the broader context for the thought of the iconic liberal republicans Constant and Tocqueville — with particular attention to the ways in which liberal and republican registers were deployed in both support and critique of empire, and to how the articulation of liberal and republican agendas in France was affected by the Algeria conquest. It also discusses the first Algerian contribution to French public deliberation about the conquest, Hamdan Khodja’s 1833 text Le Miroir, a work that self-consciously inhabited both a liberal cosmopolitan and a Muslim perspective and that was nearly alone in French debates in making a principled argument for Algerian.

In July, Stanford's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) will welcome its ninth class of Draper Hills Summer Fellows hailing from 24 countries around the world. The program is an integral part of the CDDRL's effort to train practitioners who are working on the front lines of political change in places where democracy is underdeveloped or at risk.

The 2013 class was selected from over 500 applicants and represents some of the most courageous and innovative democracy leaders around the world. Their experience and track record of success earned them a spot in this highly competitive program.

From Burma to Ukraine, the 2013 fellows are leading organizations and programs - often at tremendous odds - to advance democratic practices, combat corruption and uphold human rights.

For 11 years Zing Mar Aung was a political prisoner in Burma for her involvement in the pro-democracy movement. After her release in 2009, Mar Aung dedicated her energy to building Burmese civil society by co-founding a number of civil society organizations - including the Yangon School of Political Science - to increase civic engagement. In recognition of her contributions, Mar Aung received the International Women of Courage Award in 2012 by former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

As the Russian government tightens its grip on civil society, the country's only independent polling center - the Levada Center - has come under attack. Working as a researcher and public commentator, Denis Volkov frequently publishes opinion pieces on the protest movements and serves as a spokesperson for Levada. Labeled as a "foreign agent" by the Russian government, the Levada Center fears closure for its independent analysis and authoritative voice.

Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi commands a significant online presence with upwards of a quarter million Twitter followers. In the height of the Arab Spring, Al Qassemi - who hails from the United Arab Emirates- became a leading commentator on Arab politics and reform for a growing online audience. In 2011, Time magazine chose Al Qassemi's Twitter feed (@SultanalQassemi) amongst its 140 Best Twitter Feeds list. His analysis is also published in Middle East-based newspapers, as well as Foreign Policy, The Guardian and The Financial Times.

The three-week fellowship program begins on July 22 and is taught by a team of interdisciplinary Stanford faculty members who include leading political scientists, lawyers and economists who are pioneering innovative research in the field of democratic development. 

One of the few programs of its kind in academia, the Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program combines the rich experiences of practitioners with academic training to maximize the impact of their work to advance democratic change.

Fellows live together on the Stanford campus where they connect with peers, exchange experiences and participate in shared activities. The program is funded by the generous support of Bill and Phyllis Draper and Ingrid von Mangoldt Hills.

The program will accept applications to the 2014 program beginning in September.

One of the routine assumptions of students of democratization has been that there is a close, causal relationship between liberalization and democratization. The former is said to drive those who concede it toward convoking credible elections and, eventually, tolerating ruler accountability to citizens. The link between those processes of regime transformation is alleged to be the mobilization of civil society. It has been argued that the weakness or absence of this linkage is one (among many) of the conditions which make the polities of the Middle East and North Africa resistant to democratization. We propose to open a public discussion on this topic.
