Announcing the Stanford/SPICE East Asia Seminars for Teachers in Hawaii
SPICE, with generous support from the Freeman Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of a new teacher professional development opportunity for secondary school teachers in Hawaii.
The Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE), with generous support from the Freeman Foundation, is proud to announce the launch of a new teacher professional development opportunity for secondary school teachers in Hawaii.
The application opens today for the Stanford/SPICE East Asia Seminars for Teachers in Hawaii (or “Stanford SEAS Hawaii”), a new nine-month professional development program for Hawaii teachers who wish to enhance their teaching of East Asia. The inaugural 2020–21 program is open to public high school teachers on the island of Oahu. It will run from November 2020 to July 2021.
“Rather than offer one-off seminars, we wanted to give teachers a longer-term opportunity to build and enrich their knowledge about Asia,” said Rylan Sekiguchi, manager of Stanford SEAS Hawaii, who was raised on Oahu and attended Roosevelt High School in Honolulu. “But beyond that, we also want to equip teachers with the tools to easily translate that knowledge into the classroom and to foster a teacher community across Oahu. Those are our three goals for this teacher PD program.”
Selected teachers—Stanford/Freeman SEAS Hawaii Fellows—will build their content knowledge of East Asia by learning from experts based at both Stanford University and local institutions in Hawaii. Fellows will also receive extensive curricula, teaching resources, and training from SPICE to support their teaching of East Asia in the high school classroom.
