About the Organization:
The Center for Experimental Economics in Education (CEEE) is an impact evaluation organization that aims to inform sound education, health and nutrition policy in China. CEEE is a core partner of FSI’s Rural Education Action Program (REAP). Together, CEEE and REAP design and evaluate projects that aim to improve health and education in rural China, then communicate the results of these project evaluations to local and national government ministries within China. Ongoing projects include the founding of a social enterprise that provides free vision care to low-income students, the establishment of village-based parenting centers that facilitate play and reading for babies and toddlers, and a computer assisted learning program in primary schools.
All project logistics and fieldwork start and end at the CEEE offices in Xi’an. On any given day, CEEE staff may be engaged in sorting books and toys destined for parenting centers, meeting with local government officials, hosting international visitors, preparing project outreach materials, or presenting research results to an academic audience. Fieldwork takes research staff and students into rural villages across China to conduct surveys, meet with local partners, and interview project participants.
The first two weeks of the fellowship will be spent participating in a structured qualitative research study conducted in conjunction with senior research staff from both REAP and CEEE. This two week introduction to fieldwork will give the fellow an opportunity to meet CEEE staff and learn the ins and outs of conducting a field-based study.
The remaining six weeks of the fellowship will be based out of the CEEE office in Xi’an. The fellow will provide project and field support to CEEE faculty and research staff on an as-needed basis, and will also be expected to provide general research support by conducting literature reviews, translating key project documents into English, providing website assistance, and drafting project reports.
Eligibility and Skills Required:
- Demonstrated interest in development issues, especially rural health and education
- Ability to live and work in a Mandarin-speaking environment
- Strong writing and analytic skills
- Ability to work with a large degree of independence
Advanced (second year college-level) proficiency in Madarin
This fellowship is based in Xi’an, China. The fellow may also travel with local students and researchers to research sites in the surrounding province (Shaanxi) or beyond. Xi’an is one of the four ancient capitals of China, and is home to the Terracotta Army and the starting point of the Silk Road.
The student must be eligible to travel to China and must have a passport valid until at least March 2018. The student will likely need to get an F (visitor) visa to China and will be responsible for obtaining that visa him or herself. REAP will advise on visa procedures.
FSI is committed to providing its opportunities to students regardless of financial constraints. FSI’s Global Policy Interns are provided with a stipend to cover travel and living expenses during the summer. These stipends average $6,400 per student. Students must submit a budget with their estimated costs along with their application. - 3-5 page analytic writing sample
- No more than a 500-word answer to the question: “If you wanted to improve the educational outcomes of rural Chinese schoolchildren, what kind of project would you encourage REAP to add to its portfolio, and why?”
- A letter or statement from the language center or a language teacher indicating level of Mandarin language fluency. If you are a native speaker and do not have documentation, please provide a brief statement of your language background.
