Carlos Pascual '80 named U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, joins President Obama in Guadalajara

Carlos Pascual, Stanford class of 1980, has been named U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. In an auspicious start to his new role, Pascual joined President Obama in Guadalajara, Mexico on August 9 at the start of the mini-summit with Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The annual meeting was started four years ago as a way for the three neighboring countries to build on ties established by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and to address contentious trade and immigration issues. Also on the summit agenda this year were the economic crisis, climate change, the swine flu pandemic and the battle against drug trafficking. Read more »

Book offers new roadmap for tackling transnational threats

As fallout from accelerating climate change and the economic meltdown reveals, today's gravest threats are transnational, demanding unprecedented cooperation among competing nations to find lasting solutions. The policies and strategies developed for the balance-of-power rivalries of the 20th century no longer apply in this one, according to the authors of "Power & Responsibility," a book launched March 17 at Stanford.

Stedman, Jones, Pascual address Power and Responsibility in New Era of Transnational Threats

In their new book, Power and Responsibility: Building International Order in an Era of Transnational Threats, Stedman, Jones, and Pascual seek to mobilize more effective international action on transnational security threats and build political support for revitalizing international institutions. This requires a new foundation for security of "responsible sovereignty" -- requiring nations to protect their own people and to cooperate across borders to safeguard common resources and tackle common threats.

Managing Global Insecurity project launches 'Plan for Action' in Washington, DC

CISAC's Stephen Stedman and partners from the Brookings Institution and New York University released a comprehensive set of foreign policy recommendations for the next U.S. president in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 20, a week after the project was unveiled at Stanford.
