CDDRL now accepting applications for Pre and Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law is currently accepting applications from pre-doctoral students at the write-up stage and from new postdoctoral scholars working in any of the four program areas of democracy, development, evaluating the efficacy of democracy promotion, and rule of law. Applicants working at the intersection of two or more of these issue areas will receive preferential consideration. Read more »

Stanford's Michael McFaul nominated as new ambassador to Russia

Michael McFaul, a Stanford political science professor, senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and Hoover Institution Bing Senior Fellow, has been nominated by President Obama to serve as the next ambassador to Russia. If confirmed, McFaul, who has also served as FSI's deputy director and director of its Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, will succeed John Beyrle. Read more »

In the May-June edition of The American Interest, Francis Fukuyama traces the contemporary history of U.S. development policy and its failure to incorporate Huntingtonian-style theory, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of economy, politics, and society. Egypt experts convene at Stanford

On April 29, the Program on Arab Reform and Democracy at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law hosted a conference to discuss post-revolutionary Egypt. This was a rare opportunity to assemble twelve Egypt scholars and take a deep dive into a subject of historic significance.
