Research Interests
agricultural policy; food policy; European world trade organizations; international trade in agricultural products; farm policy in the European Union; the process of economic integration

Timothy Josling is a professor, emeritus, at the (former) Food Research Institute at Stanford; an FSI senior fellow by courtesy; and a faculty member at FSI's Forum on Contemporary Europe . His research focuses on agricultural policy and food policy in industrialized nations; international trade in agricultural products; and the process of economic integration. He is currently studying the reform of the agricultural trading system in the World Trade Organizations, including the agenda for the next round of negotiations; the role of state trading enterprises in agricultural trade; and the experience with the SPS Agreement. He has also done research on the agricultural trade policies of countries in the Caribbean Basin; expected changes in farm policy in the European Union as a result of the EU's expansion to include countries from Central Europe; and the question of regional integration and its role in the multilateral system, in particular in the reform of agricultural trade.

At Stanford, Josling has taught courses on U.S.-European Economic and Security Relations, and on the Economics of Regional Trade Agreements. Before coming to Stanford in 1978, Josling taught at the London School of Economics and at the University of Reading (England). Born in England, he received a BS in agriculture from the University of London, an MS in agricultural economics from the University of Guelph (Canada), and a PhD in agricultural economics from Michigan State University.
