Dr. Michael Wara testified before the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research
PESD in the newsOn December 3rd, Dr. Michael Wara testified before the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research about carbon offsets. Dr. Wara along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Chief Economist, the Congressional Budget Office's Assistant Director for Microeconomics Studies, and a panel of professors with expertise in agricultural and environmental economics, participated in the Committee's continued review on the costs and benefits of agriculture offsets.

"Cash for clunkers" not cost effective for carbon dioxide emissions reduction
PESD in the news: New York Times on August 14, 2009PESD affiliated faculty Michael Wara's assessment of the popular "cash for clunkers" program is cited in The New York Times. While the government's cash payments for replacing old cars with more fuel efficient new ones may have value as an economic stimulus, Wara calculates that they are an expensive way to fight climate change, at an estimated $200-400 per ton of avoided carbon dioxide emissions.
