Research Interests
the economics and health impacts of tobacco control policies; quality improvement in depression care; how inpatient physician-residents' workload and team structure affect patient outcomes
Michael Ong joined CHP/PCOR in July 2003 to participate in the VA Ambulatory Care Practice and Research Training Fellowship Program. His research focuses on the economics of tobacco control and on quality improvement in depression care. He also is working on a project that examines how the workload of inpatient physician-residents, and the structure of the teams they work in, affect patient outcomes. He recently published a paper in the American Journal of Medicine that examined the health benefits and economic effects of banning smoking in all U.S. workplaces. He has also authored a paper examining how copayment increases affected the consumption of mental health drugs in Sweden, and he has co-authored several other papers on the economics of tobacco control policies. He received a BS in biological sciences from the University of California-Irvine, an MD from UC-San Diego, and a PhD in health services and policy analysis from UC-Berkeley. He completed an internal medicine residency (primary care track) at UC-San Francisco.
