Phibbs comments in SF Chronicle on poorly organized system of neonatal intensive care
Appeared in San Francisco Chronicle, October 6, 2004
CHP/PCOR associate Ciaran S. Phibbs provides comment for a lengthy San Francisco Chronicle article that examines the state's poorly organized system of providing neonatal intensive care. The Oct. 6 article -- one of a five-part series on infant mortality -- discusses how the fast growth and varied quality of neonatal ICUs mean that more of the sickest babies are born or treated where they are less likely to survive. The article references a 2002 study by Phibbs which found dramatically higher survival rates for premature, low-weight infants born at hospitals with the most experience and expertise at caring for sick infants.
