In San Jose Mercury News column, Diamond says "near democracy" still possible for Iraq
CDDRL In the News: San Jose Mercury News on May 18, 2004A May 18 opinion column in the San Jose Mercury News, titled "Why are we in Iraq?" includes comment from CDDRL faculty member Larry Diamond, who says it is still possible that "a near democracy or semi-democracy" -- though perhaps not a full democracy -- could emerge in Iraq. The columnist, Trudy Rubin, advocates pushing for Iraqi elections soon, and then ending the U.S. occupation of the country.
