CDDRL Coordinator Larry Diamond weighs in on what would have been, if Iraq had not been invaded
CDDRL In the News: San Francisco Chronicle on February 25, 2007Four years after the Bush administration decided to enter Iraq, Larry Diamond provides some insights into what likely would have been if the US had decided not to enter into Iraq. Without the war, had Hussein remained in power, "a very horrible dictatorship would be continuing to reign in that country," said CDDRL's Larry Diamond. However, it is also thought that Hussein would have been too weakened by international sanctions to resume building weapons. Diamond also states that from a human rights standpoint the " Shiites, collectively, have an opportunity for power, for resources, for dignity as a group that they didn't have before". Unfortunately, it seems like there is still a long road ahead before circumstances get better for the Iraqis.
