Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies

William and Flora Hewlett Endowment Fund for International Studies and Research at Stanford

Fellowship

Application period closed on April 14, 2008.

The William and Flora Hewlett Endowment Fund for Area and International Studies and Research at Stanford was established in 1980. Income from the fund is used to provide discretionary support for area and international studies and research at Stanford. The Hewlett Fund is administered by the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) with the advice of a faculty committee which reviews all proposals and awards grants on a competitive basis.

Awards typically support faculty research travel or materials, course development, conferences and research assistants. Examples of purposes that would not be appropriate for Hewlett awards include regular faculty salaries (including summer support), capital improvements, or permanent periodical subscriptions. All transactions, whether reimbursement or direct purchases, are to be processed by the faculty members home department and routed through the FSI Fellowship Manager for approvals.

Due to the limited funds available, the Hewlett Fund Committee accepts and reviews proposals for short-term imminent, and relatively low-cost activities or programs only. Awards range from $500 to $4,500 and are often awarded as supplements to external grants.

Awards are made on a year-to-year basis, subject to annual competition and evaluation. Requests in excess of $5,000 and/or proposals for more than two years of funding will seldom, if ever, be considered. Awards are subject to term limits and upon expiration, any remaining balance returns to the Committee control.

Proposals will be accepted from members of the Stanford faculty throughout the university. In all cases, the proposal should state how an award would enhance the capacities of the programs at Stanford that are both international and interdisciplinary, and the professional quality of teaching and research.

Proposals to the Hewlett Fund should include the following information:

  • Statement of purpose, including explanation of how the request will enhance international studies at Stanford;
  • Inclusive dates of funding request (maximum term is 18 months);
  • Itemized budget request, including university fringe and infrastructure fees;
  • Description of funds currently available or requested from other sources for same proposal purpose.

Submission

Proposals should be emailed to the FSI Fellowship Manager as an attachment in Word, Excel and/or PDF form.
