Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program in Japanese Studies
Fellowship
Application period closed on November 2, 2007.
Through the generous support of the U.S.-Japan Foundation, the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) at Stanford University is seeking highly promising post-doctoral candidates to participate in a fellowship program in Japanese Studies with an appointment to begin in the 2008-2009 academic year.
The fellowship will cover a 12-month period with a possibility for renewal for an additional year. The fellow will be provided with office space and access to the libraries and resources of Stanford University.
Eligibility:
Applicants should have received a doctoral degree in humanities or social sciences discipline. Those who are chosen to receive a fellowship must have been awarded a Ph.D. between June 1, 2005 and August 31, 2008. Recipients of fellowship may not be more than three years beyond receipt of doctoral degree at the start of appointment. Fellowships may be given to those who hold continuing, assistant-professor-level teaching positions. U.S. citizenship is not required. We regret that those who are about to receive a Stanford Ph.D. are not eligible for consideration for this fellowship program. Stanford Ph.D's in permanent teaching positions, provided they have received a Ph.D. less than three years before, are eligible to apply.
Requirements:
All fellows will be expected to teach two courses per appointment term (minimum of one each year). Residence in the local area (within 15 miles) and participation in Institute and University activities is required during the term of the appointment.
Salary:
The award carries a 12-month stipend or salary, commensurate with experience. One-way transportation to Stanford for the fellow and immediate family members, along with moving expenses, are reimbursable up to $2,500. Funds are available each year for supplies and expenses and research-related expenses.
Application Process:
Please submit 1 original and 1 collated copy of the complete set.
- NOTE: One large paperclip or binder clip per each collated set only, NO STAPLES
- NOTE: Cover letters are not requested and will not be forwarded with applications to review committee.
- If you would like to have receipt of your application acknowledged, please include a stamped, self-addressed postcard.
A complete application is composed of the following items:
1. Completed application form, available in PDF format.
or Microsoft Word format
Note: Applicants who are not native speakers of English must also include the date and score of the most recent TOEFL examination or provide other evidence of proficiency in English. Exceptions are granted for applicants who have earned a Ph.D. from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association in the United States, or from a non-US college or university of recognized standing where all instruction is provided in English. This exception does not apply if the courses were completed in a country where English is spoken but not all courses were provided in English. Being a citizen of the United States does not automatically exempt an applicant from taking the TOEFL; if the applicants first language is not English, the applicant must meet the exception above or submit TOEFL scores.
2.Curriculum vitae.
3. Three-page, double-spaced proposal (approximately 1,000 words) of scholarly work to be undertaken during the fellowship tenure, with an emphasis on what courses the applicant would offer to further Japanese studies at Stanford. Please include areas of teaching interests, experience and teaching evaluations (evaluations not required, but are encouraged to be included if possible). Course syllabi and descriptions of course material may be attached to this section.
4. Complete list, in bibliographic form, of scholarly publications. Information should be grouped as books, monographs, significant book reviews, and articles. Indicate publisher, date of publication, volume and page numbers of scholarly journal in which reviews or articles appear, or, if unpublished, indicate whether the work has been accepted for publication.
5. Copy of the dissertation abstract and table of contents ONLY. Do not include the full dissertation.
6. Three letters of references sent directly to our office, on or before the deadline, from people who are familiar with your scholarly work. At least two should have been written within the last year. At least one should be from someone based in the United States and one should be from someone familiar with your teaching experience.
