O'Bie Shultz Fellowships in International Studies: Dissertation Completion GrantFellowship

The purpose of the O'Bie Shultz Dissertation Completion Grant is to help with minimal cost-of-living expenses to enable Stanford graduate students to write and complete their Ph.D. dissertations on subjects related to international studies.
Funds are limited, so it is not possible to support every worthy proposal. The awards are intended to supplement other non-FSI sources of financial support and generally will not include tuition. Awards from this application cycle are intended to be disbursed during the 2013-14 academic year.
Applicants must be Stanford graduate students in good standing who have completed all requirements for Ph.D. except final dissertation (reached TGR status).
Preference is given to students who have been engaged in research overseas and thus who may have required more than the normal time necessary to complete the Ph.D.
The amount of the award is determined on an individual basis contingent upon the interdepartmental faculty selection committee's approval. Students must be registered in TGR status at the time of disbursal of award.

- Curriculum Vitae
- Detailed Project DescriptionThis description should be clear and concise, especially to readers outside of your discipline, and should be no longer than five double-spaced or three single-spaced typewritten pages. The description should include the following:
- -The principal focus of the topic;
-How the data will be organized in the dissertation;
-Your interpretation of how your topic relates to international studies.
- Research Timetable Explain where the research now stands, what will be accomplished during the grant period, and what will remain to be done. Estimate the date of completion of the research. Should be no longer than one page.
- Statement of Income A statement of anticipated grants, loans, and other sources of income should be disclosed with every application. Cost of living awards to students in the dissertation write-up stage of their academic career will be awarded at a standardized level (to be established annually by FSI) and a detailed expense budget is not required, unless living outside of the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Transcripts Transcripts should cover all graduate work, including evidence of work recently completed. Current printouts from Axess are accepted.
- Recommendation Letters (not required to be included in packet from student) No more than three letters of recommendation. Applicants should provide a copy of the Request for Letter of Recommendation and Instructions for Letter of Recommendation (contained in application file) to each individual asked to write a letter of recommendation. The form contains information pertaining to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Applicants must indicate by signature whether or not s/he waives the right to inspect the completed recommendation. The letters should come from faculty members, one of whom is the applicant's major advisor, directly to the Fellowship Coordinator. All envelopes should be addressed to the FSI O'Bie Shultz Committee. Letters may be included with the applicants materials if the letters are in individually signed and sealed envelope(s), accompanied by the Request for Letter of Recommendation form. Applicant inquiries requesting confirmation of receipt of letters cannot be processed in a timely manner due to staffing limitations and are discouraged.
