The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) Mentored Undergraduate Research Program (MURP) offers internship opportunities for Stanford undergraduates to work on projects with FSI faculty and research staff. The program is designed to promote mentoring relationships and enable undergraduates to contribute to the Institutes policy-relevant research. Research interns will be paid $12.50/hour and should plan to commit 8-10 hours per week during the academic year, or up to 40 hours per week during the summer quarter, as determined by the research mentor. Internship research projects should engage the student intellectually and involve limited clerical work.

Eligibility

  1. Any member of the Stanford faculty, academic research staff, visiting faculty, senior fellows by courtesy, and directors of the FSI research centers may request an undergraduate research intern
  2. Students from any school may be admitted to the program.
  3. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.3.

How to Apply

To request a research intern, research mentors must submit an e-mail to Belinda Byrne, Associate Director for Administration and Faculty Affairs at FSI.

Requests should include the following information: 

  • purpose of the research project; 
  • hours per week needed (not to exceed 10 hours per week during theacademic year); 
  • duration of project (approval will be granted for one quarter at a time). 

Internships are for a minimum of one quarter and can be extended on a perquarterbasis for a maximum of one year during the regular calendar year by agreementof the student and mentor. Internships will be available in the summer. 

Student interns must contact Mitzi Green (3-4581) prior to beginning the internship to ensure that paperwork is completed so they will be paid. Within two weeks of the start of the internship, the student and research mentormust submit a suitable research product description to Belinda Byrne, for review by FSI Director Coit D. Blacker. The product description should be commensurate with the work the student does.

Examples include:

  • creation of a new data set or annotated bibliography of the field; 
  • a report or series of reports based on research presentations and seminars; 
  • a research paper that contributes substantially to the research that the researcher directs.

Following the internship, both student and research mentor will be asked to assess their internship experience and submit the assessment to Belinda Byrne, for review by FSI Director Coit D. Blacker.
