FSI Larry Yung Fellowships

The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) is pleased to announce the availability of funds to support graduate students from Hong Kong or the People's Republic of China (PRC) who are studying in the social sciences. This fellowship is made possible by a generous gift from Larry Yung.
The fellowship will provide three quarters full tuition and a reasonable living stipend, to selected graduate students. Awards will be made on a competitive basis to graduate students in any stage of their graduate academic career. Prior recipients are ineligible to apply.
General Guidelines:
1. Applicants must be Stanford students in good standing.
2. Applicants must be registered in one of the following:
- Anthropology
- Communication
- Economics
- Political Science
- Psychology
- Sociology
Research-related expenses that can be funded include tuition and reasonable living expenses. No funds are available to cover maintenance costs for dependents and spouses.
The amount of the award is determined annually, with consideration to university levels set for the year of award.
Application Process:
A complete file must have the following components:
1. Completed Application
or2. Curriculum Vitae
3. Academic Timetable / Letter of Intent
Should be no longer than two pages. In this letter you should explain where your graduate academic career now stands, what milestones or goals you intend to accomplish during the award period, why you should be selected for this award, and what will remain to be done at the end of three quarters. If possible, estimate the date of completion for your degree.
4. Statement of Income
A statement of anticipated grants, loans, and other sources of income should be disclosed with every application. Cost of living awards (stipends) to graduate students will be awarded at a standardized level (to be established annually by FSI) and a detailed cost of living budget is not required.
5. Copy of Transcripts
Undergrad transcripts welcome, but not required if you are a second year student at Stanford. Transcripts should cover all coursework, including evidence of work most recently completed. Axess printouts accepted.
6. Letters of Recommendation
No more than Two Letters of Recommendation. Applicants should provide a copy of the Request for Letter of Recommendation and Instructions for Letter of Recommendation (contained in application file) to each individual asked to write a letter of recommendation. The form contains information pertaining to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Applicants must indicate by signature whether or not s/he waives the right to inspect the completed recommendation. The letters should come directly from faculty members, one of whom is the applicant's major advisor, sent to the Fellowship Manager. All letters should be sent directly to FSI, or may be included with the application materials if they are each in a signed, sealed envelope and accompanied by a signed Request for Letter of Recommendation form.

To receive confirmation of receipt of application, please include a self addressed postcard. Postcards will be date stamped and returned to applicant via United States Postal Service.
Applicant inquiries requesting confirmation of receipt of application components cannot be processed in a timely manner due to staffing limitations and are strongly discouraged.
