Clinical innovation has contributed to a growing gap between current child health policies and the evolving epidemiology of pediatric need. Although current policies and delivery systems were designed primarily to address acute illness -- the traditional threat to child health -- chronic illness has now become the more pressing threat. Similarly, effective new clinical interventions have reshaped mechanisms of disparity creation in child health outcomes, and have generated increasing pressure for the pediatrics field to address precursors of adult-onset disease such as hypertension and heart disease. Together, these trends suggest the need for a major rethinking of pediatric goals, training and delivery structures. This session will explore these issues with a focus on developing an analytic initiative capable of guiding a reconstructive process.
