Dick Stockford - Senior Civil Servant, UK Department of Health at Visiting Professor, Nuffield Institute at Leeds University
Please join Professor Emeritus Alain Enthoven and colleagues on Friday, January 25th, for a special presentation by Professor Dick Stockford. Dick Stockford is a Senior Civil Servant in the UK Department of Health and Visiting Professor at the Nuffield Institute at Leeds University. He is Director of Planning in Trent (one of the eight NHS Regions) where his responsibility for the Management of Change, Modernisation and major Primary Care, Mental Health, Children and Elderly People's services across the Region. Dick Stockford is a Graduate in Economics (London Unversity 1969) but began his career as a Criminologist studying prison policy. He has worked in major public institutions ever since. Following a 17 year stretch in Local Authority Social Services in Norfolk and Cambridgeshire (latterly as Director of Operations) he became a Board Member of East Anglia Regional Health Authority as Director of Planning. In 1992 he was seconded to the (then) NHS Management Executive heading up the Purchasing Unit with a particular emphasis on mergers, effective purchasing, joint commissioning and the development of the contracting process in the NHS. Since 1995 he has been a Board Director of the Trent Regional Office of the NHS Executive specialising first in Performance Management and latterly Policy Development and Planning. He has a responsibility for the implementation of the National Service Frameworks, Primary Care, Health & Social Care and links with Local Authorities, Service and Organisational Configuration and the development of the Learning Network and the Modernisation and Business Planning Process. Professor Stockford has lectured and published widely on current issues in health and social care. He is a non-executive director of "Initiatives in Care" and a Member of the Strategic Management Board of the Nuffield Institute. He has visited and advised on health services in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Thailand and the USA encouraging a comparative approach to healthcare management. He is a keen hillwalker and lives high in the Pennines in Yorkshire. He will be accompanied by his wife, Diana, and two children Leo 12 and Freya 9.
