Speaker
Paul A. Heidenreich - Stanford University
The recent Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) randomized more than 33,000 patients with hypertension to initial treatment with three different medications (lisinopril, amlodipine and chlorthalidone). In this Research in Progress seminar, Dr. Heidenreich will discuss a cost-effectiveness analysis using data from this trial that demonstrates the difficulties of combining trial results with long-term models of economic and health outcome. He will show that even with a large "megatrial," small differences in mortality cannot be excluded that will have important implications for the choice of initial drug therapy.
