ATPIII guidelines for use of statin medications combine elements of "risk-based" prescribing and "cholesterol level-based" prescribing. Do they make sense? Would alternate, simpler guidelines be more cost-effective? How does the plummeting cost of statins change things? The CHD Policy Model, a Markov state-transition model of the US population, provides some answers.
