The ACA and other ongoing efforts to address health care costs and quality may encourage changes in physician practice size and the relationships between physicians and hospitals. We examine changes in the size and organization of physician practices between 2000 and 2010, finding substantial changes over this time period. We then relate data on changes to measures of quality of care for Medicare patients and prices for physician services paid by private PPO plans, finding significant relationships in both cases. We discuss implications for optimal policy formation.
