The Siegfried Unseld Reading in Contemporary German Literature presents Hans-Ulrich Treichel, one of Germany's most prominent writers.

Treichel is best known in the US for his first novel, Lost, which describes his own family's loss of an infant son during the Russian advance in 1945 from the perspective of the 8-year-old brother (the second son). His novel Leaving Sardinia has also appeared in English, and his most recent novel, Menschenflug, recently won the Kritikerpreis.

Treichel is also a poet, essayist, librettist, and professor at the University of Leipzig's Institute of German Literature. He has received many literature prizes, most recently The Eichendorff-Literaturpreis and the Kritikerpreis.
